⚠️ Expired Inspection Penalties

Driving with an Expired Inspection
What It Actually Costs

A base fine of $25 in Pennsylvania, $40 in Massachusetts, $25 to $50 in New York, and up to $250 in Virginia. Court costs and surcharges usually multiply those numbers. Here's what you pay in each state, and how to stop owing it next year.

North Carolina

Fines listed are base amounts. Court costs, late fees, and jurisdiction-specific surcharges commonly double or triple the out-of-pocket total. Check your state\'s current statute for the exact figure.

What actually happens if you\'re caught

If an officer pulls you over and notices an expired sticker, they write you a fix-it citation or a traffic infraction depending on your state. In most jurisdictions, the ticket requires you to get the vehicle inspected within a set window and provide proof, after which the fine may be reduced. Ignore it and the fine escalates into a full penalty, potentially with a court appearance.

Parking enforcement can also ticket a parked vehicle with an expired sticker. This is common in Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. The car doesn\'t have to be moving for the violation to apply.

An expired inspection often also blocks your vehicle registration renewal. If inspection and registration are both expired, you\'re looking at compounding penalties — one ticket for the sticker, another for the registration, and in some states the vehicle is impoundable.

Is there a grace period?

Officially, in most states, no. Pennsylvania has no statutory grace period. Virginia has none. Massachusetts has none. New York\'s tiered fine structure (lower fine within 60 days) is sometimes described as a grace period but it isn\'t — you can still be ticketed from day one past expiration.

Inspection stations themselves will not fine or penalize you for bringing in a vehicle with an expired sticker. That\'s a common confusion. The station is there to inspect, not to enforce. Police and parking enforcement handle the fine.

What to do if your inspection is already expired

1

Book the inspection today

Every day you wait adds risk of a ticket and, in a handful of states, pushes you from the lower fine tier into the higher one. Most shops do inspection same-day.

2

Don\'t drive it more than you have to

Until the sticker is current, every trip is exposure. If possible, park it and take the car to the inspection station as your next drive.

3

If you\'ve already got a ticket, address it promptly

Most states offer a reduced fine if you provide proof of passed inspection within a short window (often 20–30 days). Ignoring the ticket triggers the full penalty and potential license issues.

4

Set a reminder for next year

The whole reason you\'re here is because the date slipped past. A reminder a few days before the new sticker expires is the fix. See the vehicle inspection reminder guide.

Common questions about expired inspection penalties

What is the fine for an expired inspection in Pennsylvania?

The base fine is $25, but once court costs and fees are added, the total is typically $125 to $175. In Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Parking Authority can also issue tickets for expired inspection on parked vehicles.

How much is a ticket for expired inspection in New York?

If your inspection sticker has expired in the past 60 days, the fine is $25 to $50. After 60 days, the fine goes up to $50 to $100. Mandatory surcharges add $88 in cities and $93 in towns and villages, bringing the total to around $113 to $200.

How much is a ticket for an expired inspection in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts issues a $40 citation for an expired inspection sticker. It's a moving-violation-style ticket even if the car is parked. The citation has to be addressed within 20 days or it escalates.

How much is an expired inspection fine in Virginia?

A ticket for an expired sticker in Virginia typically costs $96 to $250 depending on the jurisdiction and whether court costs are added. It's issued as a traffic infraction.

Is there a grace period for expired inspections?

Most states don't have an official grace period. An inspection station won't penalize you for bringing in a vehicle with an expired sticker, but a police officer on the road can. New Jersey explicitly says you won't be fined at the inspection station, but you can be pulled over and ticketed anywhere.

Can you get a ticket for expired inspection while parked?

Yes, in many states. Local parking enforcement can issue an expired-inspection ticket to a parked vehicle. Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts all allow this. The sticker has to be current whether you're driving or not.

Do expired inspection tickets add points to your license?

In most states, no — it's a fix-it ticket or civil infraction rather than a moving violation. New Jersey and a few others have no points for expired inspection tickets. Check your state's specific rules, since this affects your insurance rates.

Pay Once, Not Every Year

A $25–$175 fine is avoidable. Set a reminder a few days before your new sticker expires and skip the expense next year.
