When to Renew Your
Travel Visa Before It Expires

Three to six months before expiration is the right window. Interview Waiver renewals run 2 to 8 weeks. In-person consular interviews stretch to 4 to 12 weeks, sometimes longer during peak season. Start before you have to.

When to start by renewal path

Not every renewal looks the same. The right lead time depends on whether you qualify for Interview Waiver, where you'll apply, and what time of year it is. The general rule: start earlier than you think you need to.

Recommended lead time

  • Interview Waiver eligible: Start 3 months before expiration. Mail-in or drop-box processing typically completes in 2 to 8 weeks.
  • In-person interview required: Start 6 months before. Appointment wait times alone run 4 to 12 weeks at many posts, before any processing.
  • Peak season (May–August): Add 4 weeks. Appointments fill up around school breaks and summer travel.
  • Administrative processing (221(g)): Plan for an additional 60 to 180 days if your case requires it. Cannot be predicted in advance.
  • Extension via I-539 (in U.S.): File at least 45 days before your I-94 expires. Earlier is better β€” processing can take months.

The Interview Waiver Program path

The Interview Waiver Program (IWP) lets some applicants renew without an in-person interview. On September 18, 2025, the State Department updated the eligibility rules, narrowing the program from earlier years. The current criteria apply to most renewals:

Eligibility (as of 2025):

  • Apply in your country of nationality or residence
  • Hold a prior visa in the same category that expired within the last 12 months
  • Be between 14 and 79 years old
  • No prior visa refusal (unless overcome or waived) and no eligibility issues
  • Apply for the same visa class as the most recent visa

If you qualify, you can renew by mail or drop box without an interview. Processing usually runs 2 to 8 weeks. If you do not qualify β€” or if your prior visa expired more than 12 months ago β€” you need an in-person interview at a U.S. consulate, which is a longer process.

Traveling on a visa that expires soon

U.S. visas do not follow a 6-month validity rule. That rule is for passports. You can enter the U.S. on a visa that is valid until the day of entry, even if it expires the next day. Once admitted, your stay is governed by the I-94 admit-until date, not the visa expiration.

The problem is the return trip. If you leave the U.S. after your visa expires, you need a new visa to come back. Plan a renewal abroad before departing if your visa won't be valid on your planned return. Many travelers schedule a renewal appointment in their home country as part of the trip itself.

Carrying the old expired passport with the still-valid visa is fine, as long as you also carry the new unexpired passport. Show both at check-in and at the port of entry.

Pick a date 90 to 180 days before yours

Renewal is the kind of task that feels far away until it doesn't. A reminder set 90 to 180 days before your visa expiration gives you enough runway to schedule an appointment, gather documents, and absorb a delay if something doesn't go to plan. By the time you need to act, you'll already have started.

Common questions about visa renewal timing

How far in advance should I renew my U.S. visa?

Start 3 to 6 months before your visa expires. Interview Waiver renewals typically take 2 to 8 weeks. In-person consular interviews can take 4 to 12 weeks or longer during peak season. Starting 6 months out gives you room to handle delays without travel disruption.

Can I renew my U.S. visa 6 months before it expires?

Yes. There is no minimum time you must wait. You can apply for renewal at any point β€” even with significant time left on your current visa. Renewing early means your new visa starts a fresh validity period from issuance, so you may give up some unused time, but the certainty is usually worth it.

Can I renew my U.S. visa inside the United States?

Generally no. U.S. nonimmigrant visa renewal is done at a U.S. embassy or consulate outside the United States, typically in your country of nationality or residence. The exception is the new domestic visa renewal pilot for certain H-1B applicants, which the State Department restarted in 2024 and is gradually expanding.

Who is eligible for the Interview Waiver Program?

Under the September 18, 2025 update, the Interview Waiver Program is narrower than before. Applicants must generally apply in their country of nationality or residence, have a prior visa in the same category that expired within the last 12 months, be 14 to 79 years old, and have no prior visa refusals or eligibility issues. Diplomats and certain official applicants have separate rules.

My U.S. visa expires in 6 months. Can I travel?

Yes, you can travel on a visa that expires in 6 months as long as it is valid on the day you enter the U.S. There is no 6-month validity rule for U.S. visas (that is a passport rule). However, you should not plan to leave the country while your visa is close to expiring without a renewal plan, since you may not be able to re-enter.

How early should I apply for a status extension on Form I-539?

USCIS recommends filing Form I-539 at least 45 days before your I-94 authorized stay expires. The processing time varies by service center and visa category and can range from weeks to many months. Filing early is the safest approach β€” and a timely filing usually maintains lawful presence while it is pending.

Start Before You Have To

A visa renewal takes weeks even on the fastest path. Set a reminder 90 to 180 days before expiration and the timeline works for you, not against you.
