Why Tax Day isn't always April 15

April 15 is the standard federal filing deadline under the Internal Revenue Code, but two things can push it forward. First, if April 15 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline moves to the following Monday. Second, if it falls on Emancipation Day (April 16, observed in Washington, DC), the deadline shifts to the next business day — since the IRS is headquartered in DC, that holiday applies.

In 2026, April 15 is a Wednesday and doesn't conflict with any DC holiday, so the deadline stays April 15. In 2025, April 15 was a Tuesday. In 2024, April 15 was also a Monday. In years when it shifts, the IRS announces the exact date at the start of filing season.

Tax Day date by year

2024 April 15, 2024 (Monday)
2025 April 15, 2025 (Tuesday)
2026 April 15, 2026 (Wednesday)
2027 April 15, 2027 (Thursday)

What the October 15 extension actually buys you

Filing Form 4868 by April 15 gives you six more months to submit your return. That moves your filing deadline to October 15, 2026. The extension is automatic — the IRS doesn't require a reason, and approval isn't necessary.

There's a critical catch: an extension extends the time to file, not the time to pay. If you owe taxes, the payment was still due April 15. Filing in October without paying in April means the IRS has been charging failure-to-pay penalties and interest since April 15. Extensions are most useful when you're getting a refund or need more time to file accurately on a complicated return.

If you filed an extension and your new deadline is October 15, set a separate reminder for it. Extension filers are a significant portion of late filings — people request the extension, then treat October as a hard deadline until it suddenly isn't. See the full extension deadline guide for what to do if October 15 is approaching and you haven't filed yet.

When to set your tax filing reminder

Don't set the reminder for April 14. Set it for early March. That gives you six weeks to gather documents, request missing forms, and file without rushing. The tax documents checklist shows what you'll need before you can file. Most of it takes time to locate.

BoldRemind sends advance emails at 7 days, 3 days, and 1 day before the date you set. Set the reminder for March 15 and you'll get nudges in the week before, with time to act. Set it for April 14 and you'll get an email the night before.

A tax return reminder takes 30 seconds to set. No account, no app. Just an email address and the date you want to remember.

Tax return deadline questions

What is the tax filing deadline for 2026?

The federal tax return deadline for the 2025 tax year is Wednesday, April 15, 2026. This is for most individual filers using Form 1040.

Does the April 15 tax deadline ever move?

Yes. When April 15 falls on a weekend or a holiday observed in Washington, DC (such as Emancipation Day on April 16), the deadline shifts to the next business day. In 2026, April 15 is a Wednesday, so the deadline stays April 15.

What is the tax extension deadline for 2026?

If you file Form 4868 by April 15, you get until October 15, 2026 to submit your return. The extension only covers the filing deadline, not the payment deadline. Taxes owed are still due April 15.

When can I start filing my 2025 taxes?

The IRS opened the 2026 filing season in January 2026. Most tax software began accepting returns in late January. Filing early avoids deadline pressure and gets your refund faster.

What happens if I file after April 15 without an extension?

The IRS charges a failure-to-file penalty of 5% of unpaid taxes per month, up to 25%. If you file more than 60 days late, there's also a minimum penalty of $525 (or 100% of tax owed, whichever is less). See the full penalty guide for details.

Are state tax deadlines the same as the federal deadline?

Most states follow the federal April 15 deadline, but not all. Some states have different dates or automatic conformity with federal extensions. Check your state's revenue department for the exact deadline.
