Why Tax Day sometimes is not April 15

The IRS uses April 15 as the standard deadline, but there are two reasons it can move. The first is the calendar. If April 15 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline shifts to the following Monday. The second is Emancipation Day, a Washington DC holiday observed on April 16. When that holiday lands on a Friday or weekend that affects April 15, the deadline can push to April 17 or 18.

For 2026 and 2027, neither shift applied. Both years, the deadline was the standard April 15. For 2028, the calendar pushes it to Monday, April 17.

If you missed the 2026 deadline

File and pay now, even if you cannot pay the full amount. Penalties keep accruing every month you delay, and the IRS treats people who file late and try to settle very differently from people who go silent.

For the full breakdown of penalty math, see our guide to what happens if you miss the tax payment deadline.

Set your 2027 reminder while you are here

The single best moment to set a tax reminder is the moment you are thinking about taxes. Right now. Once tax season is over, the date drifts out of mind for eleven months and you end up in the same spot next April.

Common questions about Tax Day 2026

When was Tax Day 2026?

Tax Day 2026 was Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Federal individual income tax returns and any tax owed were due by that date. The deadline applied to most filers in most states, with limited exceptions in disaster-affected areas.

When is Tax Day 2027?

Tax Day 2027 is Thursday, April 15, 2027. April 15 falls on a weekday in 2027, so there is no shift to the next business day. Set your reminder now, while you are thinking about it, and you will not be scrambling next April.

Why does Tax Day sometimes shift to a different date?

When April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or Washington DC holiday (Emancipation Day, April 16), the deadline moves to the next business day. That is why some years it lands on April 17 or April 18 instead of April 15.

I missed the 2026 deadline. What do I do now?

File and pay as soon as possible to limit penalties and interest. The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% per month and the failure-to-file penalty is 5% per month, both capped at 25%. If you cannot pay the full amount, request a payment plan online through the IRS.

How do I make sure I do not miss the next Tax Day?

Set a reminder for early April so you have a week to prepare your return and gather payment funds. The form on this page defaults to the next federal deadline. You will get reminder emails 7, 3, and 1 day before, plus one on the day.

Is the filing deadline the same as the payment deadline?

For most people, yes. April 15 is both the filing deadline and the payment deadline. An extension to file (Form 4868) gives you until October 15 to submit the return, but it does not extend the time to pay. Money owed is still due April 15.
