🛂 Passport Renewal

What Happens When You
Forget to Renew Your Passport

An expired passport means denied boarding. Emergency renewal is possible but costs $300 to $400 and requires a same-day appointment that may not be available. The trip may simply not happen.

What actually happens at the airport

You arrive at the airport. The check-in agent scans your passport and flags it as expired or about to expire within the destination's required validity window. You are denied boarding. The airline cannot let you on the plane.

There is no supervisor who can override this. There is no grace period. You paid for the ticket. The hotel is booked. You are not on that flight.

From there, your options depend on how soon your travel is. If travel is in 14 days or less, emergency renewal through the State Department is possible. If travel is in 3 days, appointments may be impossible to secure. If travel was today, you need to contact the airline and your travel insurance and start making calls.

The cost of acting early vs. the cost of scrambling

Routine renewal done ahead of time vs. emergency renewal with travel on the line.

📅

Routine renewal (9 months out)

  • Application fee: $130
  • Processing: 4–6 weeks, no urgency
  • No expedite fee needed
  • No appointment hunting
  • Total: ~$130–150

The gap between those two numbers is the cost of not having a reminder.

If your passport is already expired or close to expiring

1

Check the current processing times immediately

Go to travel.state.gov and look at current routine and expedited times. If routine processing would arrive before your travel date, you don't need to expedite and you're fine.

2

Add expedited service if you're within 3 months of travel

Expedited adds $60 and cuts processing to 2–3 weeks at the center. If your travel is 6+ weeks out, expedited plus mail time should get the passport to you in time.

3

Book a passport agency appointment if travel is within 14 days

Appointments at regional passport agencies are for urgent cases only. Book immediately through travel.state.gov. Availability is limited — don't wait even a day.

4

Contact your airline and check your travel insurance

If the trip must be rescheduled, the airline may allow a date change for a fee. Travel insurance sometimes covers trip interruption due to passport issues — check your policy.

Once you have the new passport, set the next reminder

When your new passport arrives, the first thing worth doing is setting a renewal reminder for 12 months before its expiration date. You won't have to do this again for 8 to 9 years, and next time it'll be a calm renewal by mail rather than an emergency appointment with an international trip on the line.

See the passport renewal reminder page to set it now. It takes 30 seconds and you don't need an account.

Questions about expired passports and travel

What happens if you try to travel with an expired passport?

You will be denied boarding at check-in. Airlines verify passport validity before you board, and most won't let you fly internationally with an expired document. If you somehow make it to the destination country, you'll be denied entry and returned on the next available flight at your expense.

What happens if I don't renew my passport on time?

If your passport expires before you renew it, you can still renew — there's no deadline after expiry. Passports expired within the last 15 years can typically use the DS-82 mail renewal form if they were issued when you were 16 or older. Passports expired more than 15 years ago require the DS-11 first-time application process.

How long after expiration can I renew my passport?

There is no time limit on renewing an expired US passport. However, how you renew depends on how long ago it expired. Expired within 15 years: you can use the DS-82 renewal form (or online renewal if eligible). Expired more than 15 years ago: you must apply as if getting a passport for the first time.

Is emergency passport renewal available?

Yes, for travelers with international travel within 14 calendar days. You must book an appointment at a regional passport agency through the State Department's appointment system. Same-day or next-day processing is possible. Appointments are scarce and should be pursued immediately if you discover the issue close to your travel date.

How much does emergency passport renewal cost?

Emergency renewal involves the standard application fee ($130 for a book), the $60 expedite fee, and optional overnight return shipping (~$20). If you use a private passport expediting service to help secure an appointment, add another $100 to $250. Total cost can easily reach $300 to $400 or more.

Can I travel domestically with an expired passport?

For domestic US flights, you don't need a passport at all — a driver's license or other REAL ID-compliant ID is sufficient. An expired passport has no use for domestic air travel. For domestic travel by car, train, or bus, no ID is required to board.

Don't Pay the Emergency Rate Twice

Set a renewal reminder now and the next renewal is a calm $130 process, not a $400 scramble. Free, no account, takes 30 seconds.
