USPS holiday mailing deadlines

These dates are based on USPS annual guidelines for greeting card delivery. Specific cutoffs may shift slightly each year, but the pattern stays consistent. Domestic First-Class Mail needs about two weeks for reliable delivery during the holiday surge.

Work backward from the deadline

The mailing deadline is December 1 to 7 for most people. But mailing is the last step. Before that, you need to update your address list, order or buy cards, write personal messages, and address envelopes. Each of those steps takes a few days.

Working backward: if cards need to be in the mail by December 1, you should start writing by mid-November, have cards in hand by November 15, and finalize your address list by November 10. That puts the real starting point in early November, a full month before the postal deadline.

That's why a holiday card mailing reminder set for November 1 is more useful than one set for December 1. The mailing deadline matters, but the prep deadline matters more.

Priority Mail buys you a few extra days

If you miss the First-Class window, Priority Mail typically delivers in 1 to 3 business days domestically. That extends the practical deadline to around December 18 or 19. The tradeoff is cost: Priority Mail starts at about $4.75 per envelope versus $0.73 for a standard First-Class stamp.

For a 30-card list, that's the difference between roughly $22 in postage and $142. Setting a reminder early enough to use First-Class saves real money, not just stress.

Holiday card mailing deadline questions

What is the last day to mail Christmas cards?

For standard First-Class Mail within the U.S., the USPS recommends mailing by December 16 at the latest. Cards mailed after that date may not arrive before December 25. For comfortable delivery, aim for the first week of December.

How far in advance should you mail Christmas cards?

Two to three weeks before Christmas is ideal for domestic delivery. That means mailing by early December. International cards need four to six weeks, so late November is the target for overseas recipients.

Does Priority Mail help if I miss the regular deadline?

Priority Mail typically delivers in 1 to 3 business days, which can extend your domestic mailing window to around December 19 or 20. Priority Mail Express guarantees overnight delivery if you are truly last-minute, but the cost is significantly higher for greeting cards.

When should international holiday cards be mailed?

The USPS recommends mailing international First-Class letters by late November for delivery before Christmas. Military APO/FPO addresses have their own deadlines, often earlier. Check usps.com for country-specific cutoff dates each year.

What happens if my holiday cards arrive after Christmas?

A late card is still better than no card. Most people appreciate the gesture regardless of timing. If your cards will arrive after December 25, consider reframing them as New Year's cards. The sentiment is the same, and it avoids the awkwardness of a late Christmas greeting.

Don't Wait for the Deadline

Set a reminder for early November. You'll have time to prep, write, and mail without paying for Priority shipping.
