The federal close for 2025-26 is June 30, 2026. The 2026-27 form opens October 1, 2026. State and school priority deadlines fall months earlier than the federal close โ and those are the ones that determine how much aid you actually receive.

June 30 is the legal limit, not the smart target. By the time June rolls around, state grant pools have already been awarded, school priority deadlines have passed, and most institutional aid has been distributed to earlier filers. A FAFSA submitted on June 29 still counts for federal Pell, but the rest of the aid stack โ state grants, work-study, school grants โ is likely gone.
The smart filing target is October 1, the day the form opens. States and schools that award aid on a first-come, first-served basis treat early filers preferentially. The closer you file to October 1, the more of the layered aid stack stays open to you.
State deadlines vary by hundreds of dollars in lost aid. The list below is partial โ always verify with your state grant agency:
First-come, first-served states (Illinois, Tennessee, others) reward filing on October 1. Filing in February at one of those states usually means the grant pool is already empty, even though the technical deadline has not passed.
Set one reminder for October 1, 2026 โ the day the 2026-27 form opens. Then set additional reminders four weeks before each state and school priority date that applies to you. For most students, that is two to four reminders per academic year.
If you are filing for the active 2025-26 year and have not yet submitted, the application checklist lists the documents to gather first. If you have already missed a state priority deadline, the missed-deadline guide covers what aid is still recoverable.

The federal FAFSA deadline for the 2025-26 academic year is June 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM Central time. After that, the form closes and you cannot submit at all for that year. Corrections can be made through September 14, 2026, but only on already-submitted forms.
The 2026-27 FAFSA opens October 1, 2026 (the standard opening date for FAFSA each year, returning to the traditional schedule after the 2024-25 delays). The federal deadline for the 2026-27 cycle is June 30, 2027.
A priority deadline is the date by which a state or school wants your FAFSA in to be considered for their pool of state grants, institutional aid, and work-study. Priority deadlines are usually months earlier than the federal close โ often February or March. Filing after the priority date means lower-priority for those state and school funds, even if you still qualify for federal aid.
Yes. The federal window stays open until June 30 of the academic year you are filing for. The 2025-26 FAFSA accepts submissions from any point during the 2025-26 school year up to that close. But state grants and most institutional aid are awarded long before then, so submitting in March of the school year typically means losing access to those pools.
For students entering school in fall 2026 (the 2026-27 academic year), the FAFSA opens October 1, 2026 and the federal deadline is June 30, 2027. Most schools and states have priority deadlines between November 2026 and March 2027 โ file as close to October 1, 2026 as you can.
State deadlines vary widely. California is March 2 for state Cal Grants. Texas closes January 15 for the TEXAS Grant. Pennsylvania PHEAA is May 1 for first-time recipients, August 1 for renewals. Tennessee, Indiana, and others run first-come, first-served until funds deplete. Always check your state grant agency directly โ assumed deadlines are how aid gets missed.
