June 30, 2026 โ federal deadline for the 2025-26 cycle
That's the latest date you can submit. It is almost never the date that matters most. State and school priority deadlines run months earlier, and they're the ones that decide whether you get state grants, work-study, and institutional aid.

At any given time, two academic-year cycles overlap. If you're already enrolled or graduating in spring 2026, the 2025-26 form applies. If you're enrolling in fall 2026 or later, you're filing the 2026-27 form.
Each cycle has its own federal deadline (June 30 of the second year), its own state deadlines, and its own school priority deadlines. The dates are not interchangeable. Filing the wrong cycle is one of the most common FAFSA deadline mistakes.
Federal deadlines are fixed by statute. Opening dates have shifted in recent years.
| Cycle | Form opens | Federal deadline |
|---|---|---|
| 2024-25 | December 30, 2023 | June 30, 2025 |
| 2025-26 | December 1, 2024 | June 30, 2026 |
| 2026-27 | October 6, 2025 | June 30, 2027 |
| 2027-28 (expected) | October 1, 2026 | June 30, 2028 |
Source: Federal Student Aid. Federal deadlines are statutory and have not moved. Opening dates were disrupted by the FAFSA Simplification Act rollout for 2024-25 and 2025-26, but 2026-27 returned closer to the traditional October 1 launch.
The federal deadline is the latest date the form is technically open. It is not the date by which the aid you qualify for is still available. State grants, work-study allocations, and institutional aid run on first-come-first-served pools that empty out long before June 30.
For most applicants, the deadline that matters is one of these three, whichever comes first:
The full breakdown of all three is in the federal, state, and school FAFSA deadlines guide.
Knowing the date is the easy part. Most students who miss FAFSA deadlines knew the date when they read about it in October. Then November, December, and January passed. The deadline got missed not because the date was a secret but because nothing was set up to make sure they actually filed before it.
Set a reminder for two weeks before your earliest applicable deadline. Two weeks is enough lead time to chase down a missing W-2, recover an FSA ID password, or fix a Social Security number mismatch โ the kinds of small problems that turn a 30-minute form into a four-week ordeal.
For the 2025-26 academic year, the federal FAFSA deadline is June 30, 2026. For the 2026-27 academic year, the federal deadline is June 30, 2027. State and school priority deadlines vary and are usually much earlier โ many fall between February and April.
The 2026-27 FAFSA opened on October 6, 2025, returning closer to the traditional October 1 launch after the 2024-25 cycle was delayed until December. The form is open now for students enrolling in fall 2026 or later in the 2026-27 academic year.
For enrollment in fall 2026, you complete the 2026-27 FAFSA. The form covers the full 2026-27 academic year, including fall 2026, spring 2027, and summer 2027 terms at most schools. The 2025-26 FAFSA is for students currently enrolled in the 2025-26 year.
The 2026-27 FAFSA uses 2024 tax information. Federal Student Aid pulls income data from two years prior to the start of the academic year, which is why you may be asked to import or enter 2024 returns when filing for fall 2026 enrollment.
Almost always. Many state grant programs have priority deadlines in February, March, or April โ months before the federal June 30 cutoff. Missing the state priority date can mean losing thousands in state grants and work-study funds, even if the federal form is still technically open.
As early as possible after the form opens, ideally within the first month. State grants and institutional aid are first-come-first-served. The earliest applicable deadline (state or school priority, not federal) is the one that determines whether you get the money you qualify for.
The 2027-28 FAFSA is expected to open on October 1, 2026, following the standard schedule the Department of Education has signaled it will keep going forward after the 2024-25 delays. Confirm the exact date on studentaid.gov closer to the time.
