"Grace period" gets used loosely. Some states truly have one. Most don't, but offer discretionary extensions with conditions. Here's the difference, and how to request the right one if you need it.
A grace period is written into the rules. It applies automatically. You don't ask for it, you don't pay extra for it, and missing the deadline by a few days inside the grace window doesn't change your license status. True grace periods for CPE are rare at the state board level.
An extension is a discretionary grant from your state board on written request. It usually carries conditions: additional hours in specific categories, a fee, or proof of the circumstance you're citing. Extensions are far more common than grace periods, but they're never guaranteed.
AICPA membership has its own CPE rules and its own grace structure, applied at the AICPA's discretion. A grace period from AICPA keeps your membership in good standing. It does not extend your state board deadline, and your state board does not see or recognize an AICPA grace.
If you're worried about your license, focus on your state board first. AICPA membership compliance is a separate track, and addressing one doesn't address the other.
Discretionary doesn't mean random. Boards tend to grant for documented circumstances.
Serious illness, hospitalization, or caring for an immediate family member during the reporting period. Documentation from a physician usually supports the request.
Most states have specific military accommodation provisions, often waiving fees and tying the extension to the deployment window. Command documentation required.
Federally declared disasters in your area, or documented financial hardship that prevented completing CPE. State boards generally accommodate these on written request.
File your request before the deadline if at all possible. Late requests are harder to approve, and the moment your license slips into delinquent status the process becomes formal rather than administrative.
Extensions exist for genuine emergencies. They are not a planning tool. Every CPA who ends up requesting one says afterward that they wish they'd started the hours earlier. The system that actually prevents this is unspectacular: a reminder set well in advance, with follow-ups built in.

AICPA members in good standing may receive a one-time grace period for membership CPE requirements, granted at the AICPA's discretion on written request. It does not extend your state board deadline, only your AICPA membership compliance, and the two are tracked separately.
Most don't. A handful of states allow an automatic extension if requested before the deadline, often with a penalty fee or additional hour requirement. Florida is one example, with extension provisions if you complete extra hours in specific categories. Always check your state board's rules, not generic guidance.
File a written request with your state board, before your deadline if possible, citing the reason (medical, family emergency, military duty, etc.). Include any supporting documentation. The board has discretion to grant, deny, or require additional remediation hours. Don't assume approval until you receive written confirmation.
A grace period is automatic, written into the rules, and lets you file or complete hours late without consequences within a defined window. An extension is discretionary, granted on request, and usually carries conditions like extra hours or fees. Most state boards offer extensions on a case-by-case basis but no automatic grace period for CPE.
It depends on your state's notice and cure timeline. Most boards allow 30 to 90 days after the deadline to file late with fees and stay in good standing. Beyond that window, license status typically moves to delinquent or inactive, and the path back is longer.
Most state boards have specific accommodations for licensees on active military duty, often waiving fees and granting time-based extensions tied to the deployment period. Documentation from your command is required. Provisions vary by state, so check your board's military service section directly.
