AP exam registration runs through two systems: My AP (College Board) and your school's AP coordinator. Both have to line up before the November deadline. Here's the full process for students enrolled in an AP class.
Sign in to myap.collegeboard.org, get a join code from your AP teacher, join your class section, set the exam toggle to "Yes — Register for Exam," and pay your school's AP coordinator. The school submits the order on your behalf before the November deadline.
AP registration is unusual because it splits the responsibility between College Board and your school. You declare your intent in My AP, but the actual exam order is submitted by your school's AP coordinator. Each step has its own deadline and its own place to check status.
If either side fails — if you set My AP to "Yes" but never pay, or if you pay but never set My AP to "Yes" — you are not registered. Both have to line up before the November cutoff.
The five steps above take about 15 minutes. The hard part is remembering to do them. A reminder set for early November makes sure the registration is done well before the deadline, with time to chase down a teacher for the join code if needed.
See the full guide on AP exam registration reminders or check the 2026 deadline calendar for exact dates by school.

A 6-character code (mix of letters and numbers) that your AP teacher provides at the start of the school year. Each AP class section has its own join code. You enter it in My AP to join the class section and become eligible to register for the exam.
Ask your AP teacher directly. They generate the join code in AP Classroom at the start of the school year and share it with the class — usually verbally, on the syllabus, or in a class handout. If you missed it, email the teacher or check the class learning management system (Canvas, Google Classroom, Schoology).
No. You pay your school, not College Board. Your school's AP coordinator collects exam fees and submits the bulk order to College Board. Each school sets its own payment method and deadline — usually a check, online portal, or in-person payment to the school treasurer or AP coordinator.
In My AP, the class page shows "Yes — Register for Exam" at the top once your school has placed the order. If it still shows "Undecided" or "No" after you have paid, follow up with your AP coordinator. The status updates within a few days of the order being submitted.
For a fall-semester or full-year AP class, registering in My AP after November means a late fee. For spring-semester AP classes, College Board allows late registration without the late fee — your AP coordinator handles the order in spring without penalty. Confirm with the coordinator either way.
Yes. The College Board allows self-studied AP exams, but you cannot register through My AP the standard way. You need to find a school willing to host you as an outside test-taker. See the full guide on registering for an AP exam independently.
Free, no account. Get an email before the AP order deadline so the registration is done with time to spare — not at midnight on the 14th.
