📝 How to Register for the ACT

How to Register for the ACT
A 7-Step Walkthrough

ACT registration takes about 30 minutes if you have everything ready, longer if you don't. The flow itself is straightforward — most of the friction happens before you ever sign in to MyACT, in the prep work most students skip.

Before you start: have these ready

Five small things that derail registration when they're missing. Pull these together before you log in to save yourself 20 minutes of context switching.

The 7-step registration flow

  1. 1

    Create your MyACT account

Go to my.act.org and click "Create MyACT Account." Use an email you actually check (not a school email that might lock down after graduation). Verify it through the confirmation link before moving on.

    ⏱ 5 minutes

  2. 2

    Fill out personal info

Name (use the exact name on your photo ID), date of birth, address, and grade level. Mismatches between this info and your test-day ID can get you turned away. Double-check spelling.

    ⏱ 5 minutes

  3. 3

Choose your test date and format

Pick from the available 2026–2027 test dates. Domestic students choose paper or online; international students take the online version. The system shows available test centers based on your address.

    ⏱ 5 minutes

  4. 4

Request accommodations if you need them

If you need extended time, a separate room, or other accommodations, request them through this step. Approval can take up to 7 weeks, so handle this 2+ months before your target test date — not at the deadline.

⏱ 10 minutes (request) + up to 7 weeks (approval)

  5. 5

    Upload your photo

JPG, PNG, or BMP file under 5 MB. Plain background, shoulders up, no sunglasses or hats. ACT compares this to your photo ID on test day, so use a recent one. The photo must be uploaded by the photo deadline (about a week before the test) or your registration is voided.

⏱ 5 minutes (10+ if you have to take a new photo)

  6. 6

Add the optional Writing test (or skip)

The Writing section costs an extra $25 and a few colleges still require it. Check your target colleges' policies before adding — most don't require it anymore.

    ⏱ 2 minutes

  7. 7

Pay and save your admission ticket

Confirm the order, pay the $68 base fee plus any add-ons, and download or print your admission ticket. ACT also emails the ticket — save that email so you can print again if needed. Bring the ticket on test day along with your photo ID.

    ⏱ 3 minutes

After you finish, do these three things

Most students hit submit and assume they're done. The three minutes after registration are what make the difference between a smooth test day and a panicked one.

  1. A

Save the admission ticket somewhere you'll find it

Email it to yourself, print a copy, screenshot it. The ticket is the single document that gets you into the test center.

  2. B

Set a reminder for the photo deadline

If you uploaded a photo during registration, you're already done. If you skipped it, you have until about a week before the test — and missing it cancels your registration.

  3. C

Set a reminder for test day itself

Wake-up time, what to bring (admission ticket, photo ID, calculator, snacks, water), and the route to the test center. Don't reverse-engineer this at 6 AM on test morning.

Common questions about registering for the ACT

How long does it take to register for the ACT?

About 30 minutes if you have everything ready: a parent email for verification, a passport-style photo (640 x 480 pixels minimum, 5 MB max), your high school code, and a payment card. Without those, plan on closer to an hour because you'll need to find or take a new photo.

Do I need a MyACT account to register?

Yes. All ACT registration goes through a MyACT account at my.act.org. Creating the account is free and takes about 5 minutes. You'll use the same account later to view scores, send them to colleges, and register for future test dates.

What are the photo requirements for ACT registration?

The photo must be a JPG, JPEG, PNG, or BMP file, at least 640 x 480 pixels, and no larger than 5 MB. It must clearly show your face from the shoulders up against a plain background, with no hats, sunglasses, or filters. ACT compares it to your photo ID on test day.

When should I request testing accommodations?

Request accommodations as early as possible — the approval process can take up to 7 weeks, and you must be approved before you complete registration for that test date. If you wait until close to the deadline, you may be forced to push to a later test.

Can I register for the ACT on my phone?

Yes. The MyACT registration flow works on mobile, but the photo upload step is easier on a desktop or tablet because you can verify the file size and dimensions before submitting. Many students start on mobile and switch to a laptop just for the photo step.

What is the high school code and where do I find it?

The high school code is a 6-digit number ACT uses to send your scores to your school. Find it in your school counselor's office or by searching ACT's school code lookup tool on act.org. If you skip it during registration, you can add it later from your MyACT dashboard.

What happens after I finish registration?

You receive a confirmation email with your admission ticket. Print or save it — you must bring it to the test along with photo ID. Your MyACT dashboard also shows the test center, report time, and any items you need to bring. Set a reminder for test day so the ticket isn't the thing you forget.
